4I - this indicates the four-player game in which all players try to score touch on any two opposing
Mage-lords, or control the last surviving Mage-lord
4P - this indicates the four-player game, in which players form pairs to try and score touch
against the opposing two players
CC - casting cost; the number of variant points necessary to use a specific Variant card - see VPV
DA - dual army; refers to the two player game in which each player controls two sets of pieces, or camps
MCDV - sometimes used in place of the phrase "... movement, capture, drop, or play of a Variant ..."; usually
appears in lowercase
MNA - stands for maximum number allowance, or the total number of a specific type of original
piece a player may have in play at one time; see the section on Piece Movement for
the MNA's of each piece
SA - single army; refers to the basic version of the two player game in which each player
controls one set of pieces, or camp
VPV - variant point value refers to the number of points a certain piece supplies toward
meeting the casting cost of a Variant card; see CC and the section on Notation for the
VPV's of each piece
Active - any piece or army that is still eligible to be played
Army - all the pieces controlled by one player whether original, held, or bound
Array - opening position; the position of each piece at the start of the game before any play
has taken place
Balance - the sectioned off area at the center of the board consisting of the central square and its eight
surrounding squares
Blind - any piece or army still on the board after its Mage-lord has been permanently
removed from the game; all blind pieces are also locked
Bound - captured enemy piece that has been returned to the board for play, controlled by the capturing
player
Camp - the first three ranks of each of the board's four sides; areas designated for each army's array
Cantrip - one of the three types of Variants, its effects being instantaneous and usually fulfilled in one turn
Capture - taking of an enemy piece that has never been controlled by the capturing player, usually by
displacing it (the captured piece) with a piece the capturing player controls
Caster - the player controlling a specific Variant
Challenged - refers to a position from which a Mage-lord may be captured on the attacking
player's immediate next turn
Collar - placed to function as the base for a bound piece when it is returned to the board, so as to indicate
which player will control it; also used to indicate promoted original pieces
